About This Place

Nestled in the heart of Geneva, Illinois, Gen Hoe Restaurant is a beloved destination for authentic Chinese cuisine that has been delighting locals and visitors alike for decades. Celebrated as one of the best Chinese restaurants in the Western Suburbs, Gen Hoe combines a rich culinary tradition with generously portioned dishes and a warm, inviting atmosphere that keeps guests coming back time and again.

The extensive menu at Gen Hoe is a treasure trove of classic favorites and chef specials that burst with vibrant flavors and textures. From the crispy, golden Egg Rolls packed with shrimp and a subtle hint of peanut butter, to the tender and juicy Pineapple Beef that masterfully blends juicy bell peppers with sweet pineapple, every bite is an experience. Popular dishes like Sesame Chicken and Kung Pao Chicken deliver that perfect balance of savory, sweetness, and spice, while the Mongolian Beef and Szechuan Beef bring bold, deep notes that thrill the palate.

One standout is the Gen Hoe Delight—a chef’s favorite featuring fresh shrimp, scallops, and chicken breast sautéed with onions, mushrooms, and water chestnuts, all topped with a delicate, crispy rice noodle nest that adds a beautiful textural contrast. For those searching for something heartier, the huge portions of Sesame Chicken and their perfectly prepared Egg Foo Young varieties (from lobster to vegetarian) satisfy with their rich sauces and home-style flavors.

Gen Hoe’s fried rice offerings—whether the eponymous Gen Hoe Fried Rice, shrimp-infused, or packed with pork, beef, or vegetables—are flavorful side dishes that complement every meal with their fluffy grains and savory seasoning. Not to be missed are the specialty appetizers, like the crispy, golden Crab Rangoons and the delicately spiced Walnut Shrimp, delivering bursts of sweetness and crunch.

The dining atmosphere at Gen Hoe is both charming and relaxed, with a subtle elegance reflected in the tasteful décor. The ambiance strikes a balance between cozy and refined, ideal for family dinners or casual outings. While some guests note the dim lighting during lunch, it adds a softly intimate touch that complements the rich flavors on the plate. The friendly, attentive staff enhance the experience, ensuring every visit feels personal and welcoming.

Customer testimonials reveal a consistent appreciation for both quality and generosity. Longtime patrons celebrate the restaurant’s unwavering excellence, relishing egg rolls described as “the best I’ve ever had,” and praising the tender, flavorful steak and succulent duck dishes. The friendly service, combined with hearty portions that are perfect for sharing, elevates each meal into a memorable event.

In sum, Gen Hoe Restaurant is more than just a place to eat—it’s a destination where tradition meets flavor in every intricately crafted dish. Whether you crave the comforting warmth of Hot & Sour Soup, the vibrant zest of Sweet and Sour Delight, or the palate-pleasing crunch of Fried Scallops, this Geneva gem promises an authentic and satisfying Chinese dining experience that lingers fondly long after your last bite.

I went with my wife and two sisters, great food and a nice atmosphere. I can only tell you about the food I had, an egg roll and pineapple beef. The egg roll was large and very good, stuffed with shrimp and a hint of peanut butter flavor. The pineapple beef was delicious, the beef was very tender with bell peppers and pineapples. Everyone enjoyed the dinner. The one thing that bothered me was the tip was included on the bill, didn't learn of it till we paid the bill. I was surprised that the tip was put on the bill of four people, and the waiter never mentioned it. The bill came to $107 and change. Before we knew about the tip we were discussing how much to leave. We would have left more tip than was included, oh well.

First time coming here and we had a really nice time. Our server was very friendly and the portion sizes are pretty big. We got fried scallops for appetizer which they were OK. Nothing special probably wouldn’t order again. The egg drop soup was very flavorful and for our entrées we got the duck and the Hong Kong steak. steak was very tender and juicy. The duck delicious would definitely come back and recommend this place for some good Chinese food.

Fantastic gem with quality made dishes, beautiful presentation and friendly staff. Lots to choose from on the menu. Class atmosphere, tho very dim inside with low lighting for lunch. I would have liked a brighter space for lunch. Quality decor, tastefully done. Be sure to stop in and enjoy!

The best Chinese restaurant in the Western Suburbs. My family has been going here since the seventies and tonight was as good as ever. The best egg rolls and egg foo young I've ever had. The Lee family ate still running a wonderful restaurant.

Huge menu, so hard to choose! I absolutely loved the sesame chicken, it was a huge portion, enough to share easily among 4 people. It wasn’t cartilage like most places and had good flavor, very juicy. Egg foo young gravy could have had a bit more flavor. Overall good. Prices were high to me until I saw portion size.

What an all around fantastic dining experience. The service and food were amazing. The egg rolls and pot stickers were some of the best ive had. The atmosphere is classic American Chinese and its delightful....our server Will was amazing and attentive and an all around great guy. My hot tea was perfect. I got thd tofu snd black mushrooms and thd mushrooms were some of the best I've ever tasted. This place has been around forever, and I can see why its lasted so long and its a Kane County institution.
